Fly Fishing Moody Pond

Toby - February 15th, 2009 · 1 Comment

12yrs old

A rod, an extension of your arm

it’s early in the morning and the fog is still gently rolling off the pond

SNAP

bad day for a certain lunar moth or other aquatic life

I feel the energy being cast on my back from the fiery sun rising over the precipitous mountain to my left,

the fall foliage becomes clear on the undisturbed surface of the water

I tickle a dry coachmen over the glassy water

but suddenly the silence is broken

the serenity shattered

as a brilliant red flash of a rainbow trout destroys the fly

it runs with the fly in its mouth and threatens to snap the 4 pound test tip it

and I feel the raw power of its muscle resist

after a strenuous fight the fish is hauled out of the murky depths of the pond

I cradle it from the belly and remove the crimped hook and release it

to be caught again another day
